HISTORY

In 1995, Chuck Luna was a professor in the Education Department at Colorado State University, and Carol Miller was the Minority Community Liaison for the school district in Fort Collins, Colorado.  As part of her Master's Degree program, Carol took a class from Chuck, which is where their journey began.

Carol and Chuck wanted to move beyond discussions of the causes of minority student underachievement and begin work on solutions. They believed that educators and professionals who worked with culturally diverse families were not so much 'prejudiced' as they were unskillful.  With their spouses Sherri Luna and Herb Miller as co-owners, they formed the Rocky Mountain Intercultural Institute to provide skill-building workshops in intercultural competency.

Chuck and Carol merged their expertise and experience to develop the basic Intercultural Competency Skills that form the foundation of their workshops and writing.  These skills can be applied to any cultural-base encountered in one's personal and professional lives. Carol and Chuck field-test the intercultural competency skills in their work with culturally diverse students, colleagues and clients.  Sherri Luna uses the skills in the curriculum and instruction of her elementary school students.

The participants who have attended Rocky Mountain Intercultural Institute workshops have found the skills helpful when applied to their jobs ranging from counselors to nurses, teachers and school administrators, college professors, police officers, work supervisors, business professionals, and human service case managers.

For the past fifteen years, Chuck and Carol have conducted workshops and presentations on intercultural skill building throughout the United States.  Their Rocky Mountain Intercultural Institute workshops are designed for people who want a lifestyle that promotes positive intercultural interactions and who want to learn intercultural competency skills necessary for the 21st Century.

What people are saying...

"I say without hesitation that Intercultural Competency Skills for Professionals" is the best workshop I have ever attended, and I have attended many during my 29-year career in education.  The information was presented by Dr. Luna and Carol Miller in a way that was refreshing and hopeful.  I find myself often wondering if intercultural awareness can become a reality.  After experiencing their workshop, I believe there is hope."  - High School Counselor
